Fantasy Been Very Very Good to Me

So I became a Snakes fan last night, as we had our draft for our fantasy baseball league and somehow I kept ending up with Diamondbacks. We'll see, but as someone joked, here's hoping that Stephen Drew got the health gene in his family. And I love me some young arms.

Ladies and gentlemen, the 2007 Oberkfellows (until I cut people, trade people, etc.):

Brian McCann
Chris Iannetta
Justin Morneau
Ian Kinsler
Kelly Johnson
Stephen Drew
Khalil Greene
David Wright
Miguel Cabrera
Edwin Encarnacion
Carlos Beltran
Michael Cuddyer
Chris Young
Corey Hart
Jeremy Hermida
Carlos Quentin
Luke Scott
Johan Santana
Jeremy Bonderman
Scott Kazmir
Matt Cain
AJ Burnett
Anthony Reyes
Tim Linecum
Tom Gordon
Brian Fuentes
Jonathan Broxton
Scott Linebrink

Wright, Beltran, Cabrera, Santana, Bonderman, & Kazmir! You're lacking a little bit in steals and saves, but otherwise!

What the hell??? Do you pictures of all your competitors in bed together? Damn, I should've played; I'd never have let you get away with this.

The first 5 were 5 of my 7 freezers who I have patiently corralled by grabbing them as soon as they hit the majors (yep, I had Santana back in his middle relief days, waiting, waiting). The other 2 freezers were Brian McCann, because catching is so short that having him or Mauer is a huge plus, and Morneau, although I'm not quite sold on Mr. MVP, but he should hit.

As for steals, I always believe in the "get 20 here and 20 there" approach as opposed to get a Juan Pierre who only steals bases when he isn't otherwise sucking. Since our league doesn't count any stat as a separate entity--players get points for things, so you don't get anything extra for being first in steals--all around players like a Beltran are much better. If Baseball Prospectus and other prognosticators can be trusted, Drew, Hart, Young all should be 20-20 kind of guys. Lots of them equals a very successful year. Plus one super-speedster's bad hammies doesn't ruin your season when you expect the whole team to contribute.

As for saves, Gordon and Fuentes should be good for at least 50, maybe 70 if things go well. Broxton and Linebrink are next in line if Saito and Hoffman get hurt/old/ineffective. And there are always saves around if you get desperate--who's the closer in Boston? Florida? how long will it take for NL'ers to realize Bob Wickman is very hittable? Plus there's always the possibility that the Giants realize Benitez stinks, or they pawn him off on the Marlins, and then they decide it might be nice to have Linecum become their Papelbon for at least a season.

It's baseball and it's spring--anything's possible.

If it's a comprehensive stat league, as opposed to 4x4 or 5x5, you sound golden to me.

Way too much strength in the starting rotation, middle relief, and line-up to lose, IMHO. Nicely done.

And to follow up a bit more, since I just spent time on BP's Fantasy Tracker instead of working (sshhh!), last year my pitching staff in 1280 2/3 innings averaged 9.03 strike outs per 9 innings while only giving up 2.99 walks per nine. I like that kind of intimidating staff--the "worst" K pitcher was Anthony Reyes at 7.59/9 innings.

As for my hitters, the team combined for an OBP of .370 and a slugging percentage of .515.

Now all they have to do is do it again in 2007.

Hey Mike!

Can we get your number so when George wants to talk baseball like this, he can call YOU? This is scaring me.

Mike, that is the meanest of insults. But do note there is not a single player in pinstripes on the Oberkfellows.

This is true. Well-done on that.
