Friday Random Ten

Crooked Fingers "The Rotting Strip" Bring on the Snakes
Memphis Jug Band "Memphis Shakedown" Harry Smith's Antholgy of American Folk Music, Volume Four
Marshall Crenshaw "Girls..." Marshall Crenshaw
The Magnetic Fields "Take Ecstasy with Me" Holiday
Deana Carter "The Cuckoo Bird" Songcatcher
Moby "I Like to Score" Songs 1993-1998
The Mekons "Chop That Child in Half" Original Sin
Alison Krauss & Union Station "Every Time You Say Goodbye" (live) This Is Americana
Passengers "Slug" Original Soundtracks 1
Superchunk "Under Our Feet" Indoor Living

The Magnetic Fields "How Fucking Romantic" 69 Love Songs

Now that's some mighty fine random, starting off with a true Sad Bastard Music (thanks for the term, Marty) anthem, if that's not an oxymoron. But it's one of those weeks were the songs I don't recognize as well are still quite good--Memphis Jug Band, Deana Carter--and then you have to admire the range, as even the two MF songs are about as different as they could be. And even Eno sneaks in.

Hem, "Idle" No Word from Tom
Townes Van Zandt, "Only Him or Me" Delta Momma Blues
The Cash Brothers, "Nebraska" Loose 2: New Sounds of the Old West
Anders Parker, "Proof" Anders Parker
Bonnie "Prince" Billy, "Strange Form of Life" The Letting Go
Hayden, "Waiting for a Chance to See Her" The Closer I Get
Leeroy Stagger, "Beautiful House" Beautiful House
Damien Jurado, "Dread in the Meadow" The Trees
Jason Morphew, "I’m Keeping You Here" Sunday Afternoon
Devendra Banhart, "Cancela" Cripple Crow

Bonus: Levon Helm, "Little Birds" Dirt Farmer

A very good week for me. Unusual tracks from two of my favorites, Hayden and Jurado, the best song from Oldham's best CD, and a few nice fresh cuts thrown in there too. Parker in particular is someone I've been discovering/enjoying lately. Same to a lesser extent with Morphew and Stagger.

Metric, "Soft Rock Star," Grow Up and Blow Away
Rilo Kiley, "Smoke Detector," Under the Black Light
Rilo Kiley, "Capturing Moods,"The Execution of All Things
Quickspace, "Rise," Rise
Hayden, "In Field and Town," In Field and Town
Pretty Girls Make Graves, "This is Our Emergency," The New Romance
Hayden, "Roll Down That Wave," Elk Lake Serenade
Okkervil River, "John Allyn Smith Sail," The Stage Names
(Smog), "No Dancing," Knock Knock
Sparklehorse, "Galveston," Loose --New Sounds of the Old West, 3

Bonus: Stina Nordenstam, "Stations," This is Stina Nordenstam

It was neck and neck, but the girl singers eek out a victory with the bonus. Otherwise it's a mixed bag, with some bad Rilo Kiley and some excellent Rilo Kiley, my favorite PGMG song, and a terrific Sad Bastard song (Hayden), and some interesting covers, and Stina offers a lovely finale.
