Stop, Hey, What's that Sound

I want the Daily Sound to succeed as much as anybody (well, not as much as the investors, but you know what I mean), but has anyone else noticed the trend in syndicated columns they've been running on their new opinion page?

July 5 we get Robert Novak, a man who should be in jail for publishing the information about Valerie Plame.

July 10 we get John Stossel. FAIR says a typical Stossel report/article features "anecdotes presented as fact, lopsided sourcing, constant editorializing and the exclusion of information that would challenge its premise."

Today we get Linda Chavez. She infamously called John Kerry a "communist apologist" during the 2004 election and when she ran for the Senate in 1986 she continually called her unmarried opponent Barbara Mikulski a "San Francisco-style Democrat" who should come out of her liberal closet.

Sure, run conservatives if you want, although it sure would be nice to have some balance every now and then. But can't you folks find conservatives who aren't despicable?

OK, I'm not sure who that would be either.

Merry Christmas (in July).

The more conservative columns stand out because we are so used to the left leaning columns we think they are center.

Okay, how about this one:

Dumbest Interview Question Ever

And a photo promoting his recent appearance here to boot. "Capitalism" is spelled i-d-i-o-t.

Oh, and why do John Stossel and John Palminteri have the same mustache? Just asking...

Write on, Paul! I totally agree with what you said. Funny how one hears little from the left when something displays a disproportionate balance of left-leaning editorializing/pontificating. (And, no, I'm NOT conservative/right/insert-label-here.)

And, yeah, I've often wondered about the Stossel/Palminteri moustache phenomenon as well.

The media is NOT left leaning. Years and years of conservatives stating the media is left has convinced everyone of that, but saying something over and over does not make it true (e.g. Iraq didn't attack us on 9/11). If The Sound becomes a conservative voice in this community, they are losing me, and I give them props every chance I get. Aren't Wendy and Travis enough?

It's ironic that right winger regina thinks she's in the center due to the very phenomenon that Paul identified the mirror image of.

Trekking Left, if your comment was directed toward mine, you incorrectly read something into what I wrote. I did not write that the media IS left. I WAS questioning where are the left's cries of unbalanced pov's when faced with pieces that are lopsided their direction.

And, yeah, I totally agree with you that Wendy and Travis are SO enough... of something! (I'm pretty sure though that "conservative" is not the right word for what they are enough of.)

As for Anonymous, the cowardly moniker befits the knee-jerk flaming namecalling within its message.

i like regina's comments. but leave it to "walking_lib" to stop reading what she had to say after "funny how one hears little from the left..."

blah blah George are you sad that these columns have made it into the best of what remains in the SB print journalism canon? I pick up a Sound at the Vietnamese bakery every morning with my jelly dog nut, and it represents the best daily we have to consume here. The Independent is a great rag, no doubt. It's our own Village Voice, with a good website to boot. The NP is an AP and McClatchy printout, no more.

As for John Stossel, I didn't know who he was until one night a couple days before the Film Festival last year I was walking to the Brewco Lounge and this guy was reporting from the corner in front of the pizza joint. I did a double take and thought it was Borat taping a bit. Classic.

Correction it wasn't Stossel it was Palmintieri who looked like Borat that night. I remain unaware of who John Stossel is. Apoligies to him.
